Children’s Wisconsin

Children’s Wisconsin, a nationally ranked pediatric acute care hospital, was seeking a more tailored solution than the standard Epic MyChart mobile application. While Epic MyChart served as a functional tool, the hospital's team wanted to create a custom, branded mobile app that would integrate seamlessly with their EHR system, strengthen brand loyalty, and enhance the overall patient experience.

The goal was to design a unique mobile application that would consolidate essential services into a single, easy-to-use platform. Features included symptom checking, video visits, appointment scheduling, and more—all aimed at providing a seamless, one-stop shop experience for families.

Process

Children’s Wisconsin’s UX team had already done a lot of the groundwork—focus groups, user testing, prototypes, and more—before my team came on board.

I understood that CW’s previous app had a strong adoption rate, especially with the patient portal, and the goal was clear: create a new app that keeps patients engaged in their ecosystem. My job was to build an experience that seamlessly guides families to useful tools like symptom checkers, virtual visits, and appointment scheduling—ultimately driving brand loyalty.

Before diving into wireframes and design, I knew the key insights that would shape the app:

1.) Families wanted a simple, streamlined digital healthcare experience.

2.) Parents and caregivers prefer quick, text-based communication over lengthy calls.

3.) Parents and caregivers needed a strong sense of connection with their pediatricians and healthcare providers.

Final

The final deliverables for the project included a custom pattern library to ensure a cohesive brand experience, seasonal homescreen images to keep the app fresh throughout the year, and an onboarding tutorial to guide new users through the app with ease. Additionally, I designed custom MyChart headers to create a seamless transition between the native app and MyChart, ensuring consistency and continuity across both experiences.
